By 1972 Best Chairs purchased 5 ½ acres of land to build a 21,300 square foot plant to house operations for finishing, fabricating and assembly divisions. The concrete block building provided an air
conditioned work environment to the 52 employees; this original building is part of the current location of today's Ferdinand, IN operation. At the time, Best Chairs had only four sales reps and sold
products primarily in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. Sales stretched across the U.S. and Canada sparingly.
The following year Best Chairs grew again, this time adding on a 20,000 square foot warehouse. Employment had nearly doubled to 100 people. Proving that Best is always a leader in technology, the
company began using computers to keep track of inventory, payroll and order processing. By the end of the '70's, Best Chairs had grown to over 102,000 square feet and employed 130 people.
By the time of Best Chairs 25th anniversary, work had begun on a 2,500 square foot office expansion. Employment had grown to over 300 people who could produce over 20,000 possible
model/fabric/color combinations. Recliner production was just beginning and the name 'Best Rest' was adopted for this line; it later became known simply as Best Chairs' 'Recliner Division.' It was in the
'80's that Best started making a name for themselves and being recognized as a real player in the industry. In 1985 Best Chairs was named as the top selling brand of chairs according to subscribers of
Professional Furniture Merchant. Best Chairs also became the leading manufacturer of swivel rockers in the world! With the addition of a new shipping warehouse, Best Chairs encompassed over
149,000 square feet and employed 208 men and women.
By the end of the decade, Best was growing fast. In April of 1988 Clem Lange bought out fellow co-founder Ernest Prechtel and the Lange family became sole owners of the company. Technology was
becoming a major factor in the production of chairs and Best was not shy about trying the latest state-of-the-art advances. In September of 1989, Best Chairs became the first in the area to use IBM's
AS400 computer system, which gave the company better inventory control and a shorter lead time.
Also in 1989 a 9,000 square foot expansion project for the Recliner Division began and was headed by Clem's oldest son and current Best Chairs CEO Glenn Lange. Employment had reached 325
people and Best Chairs' air conditioned facilities stretched over 225,000 square feet. Best showcased their products during these years in High Point, NC, Atlanta, GA and Dallas, TX.
Although facility expansion was nothing new to Best Chairs, in 1991 Best took a different approach to expansion. Fischer Chair of Tell City, IN, makers of rocking chairs, glider rockers and occasional
chairs, was purchased by Best Chairs. This move allowed Best to expand its product offerings and production capabilities. The former Fischer product line became what is now known as the County Line
division.
By 1991 Best Chairs' shipping had a fleet of 19 tractors and 36 trailors responsible for placing Best's products in all 50 states and over 20 countries. Best Chairs had recently purchased a building from
the former Oeding Corporation of Ferdinand and glide rocker production began in that facility. By this time Best Chairs ranked 82nd among the nation's furniture manufacturers and had experienced an
annual increase in sales for 30 years.
In 1994 Best Chairs purchased one of its suppliers, Jasper Woodworking. This enabled Best to produce its own dimensioned frame parts, and boosted employment by 72. Also during this decade sewing
operations began in Paoli, IN when Best Chairs occupied the facility formerly run by Simmons, adding another 29 employees.
In 1996, Best Chairs, Inc. formed Best Chairs Transit, Inc, a separate company handling warehousing and shipping. BC Transit immediately announced the addition of a 178,000 square foot warehouse
and was one of the first to utilize a high tech, computer controlled warehouse conveyor system to automate material handling and speed delivery. With the addition of the new warehouse, Best's
workforce exceeded 750 employees.
In the Spring of 2004, Best Chairs, amid continued product diversification and a concentrated effort on product awareness, announced it will be identified and branded as Best Home Furnishings. The
announcement came on the heels of two new product categories, stationary sofas and tables. Best Home Furnishings not only completely describes our existing product lines, but allows for endless
opportunities of product diversification in the future.
Best Home Furnishings currently operates in over 1,100,000 square feet of air conditioned, technologically advanced facilities in Jasper, Paoli, Cannelton and Ferdinand, Indiana. Best's 1,000+
employees boast seven major product categories and claims one of the most advanced furniture plants in the industry.
Today, Clem Lange, Chairman of the Board, has taken a more passive role in his leadership role at Best Chairs. He has passed along his knowledge of chairs and business to his four children, who now
lead daily operations. Clem's oldest son Glenn is CEO, Brian is President and Joey is Vice President of manufacturing . Sheila Wendholt, Clem's only daughter, is Vice President of Public Relations. With
